RE: [Honda-C70] Points backing plate loose

The backing plate IS the timing adjustment . Points air gap is dwell adjustment . Dwell is the time the points are open or closed for the coil to recharge for the next plug fire. Advance is done by the centrifugal advance that the points rubbing block slides on a cam . It sounds like you need to read the section on timing . I always scratch a line on the points backing plate & edge of the motor cover as a reference point before loosening anything. You want the arrow to line up with the F mark when the points just start to open , not the T mark . Good Luck ! Baby Huey

Subject: [Honda-C70] Points backing plate loose

Was putting in new points and noticed the main backing plate that points attached to had come loose and would move left and right. Don't know if this controls timing advance, but since it was loose I now don't have a clue where it was orginally set. Is there a starting point to the left or right that I should tighten it down to to finally set points properly?
