Hi,

My 6V battery lasted for 2 years on my 1981 passport. I bought a solenoid from Europe that is a match with the mounting bracket and all.
The funny thing is that I still use my kick starter every time. An electric starter is like air conditioning in Seattle, nice to have although used about
once or twice a year...

Thanks,

Chris

Hi guys,

I have been fighting the electric start as well. When I got a new battery for the bike two years ago the electric started to work just fine. Now that the battery is two years older it is back to not working with the button. I replaced the solenoid thinking that the old one maybe going bad. I bought the cheap one from Dr ATV. Well to no avail. If I charge the battery for a day and put it on the bike fresh off of the charger the starter works for a day. The next day it does not work. Do I need a new battery? How long do these batteries last? I can jump it at the solenoid and it starts every time. All suggestion are greatly appreciated.

Thanks

I have had EXACTLY the same issues with my '81 also. My '80 also did the same
thing afew years ago,

I pruchased a new genuine Honda solinoid from Dr ATV and that bike has been fine
ever since. I finally decided to get new solinoid for the '81. Dr ATV still has
them but they are up $92, ouch!!! But, listed just below that solinoid in the
same section is an aftermarket 6 volt solinoid for $20 bucks. only drawback is
this solinoid does not have the built on mounting brackets. I went got it last
week and put it in. It does come with a rubber mount and with that in place it
fits very snugly between the battery and frame and really cant move around, it
works GREAT!!!! For the first time in 3 years the '81 starts by electric. If you
are interested in this solinoid also look on e-bay , i found the listng under
Honda 6-volt solinoid,, i think ,and Dr ATV has an e-bay listing for $17.99 AND
FREE SHIPPING!! Hope this helps.

I have just finished getting my '81 C-70 up andd running but have spent the last
week trying to understand the electric starter. I have read a lot of posts and
they all have been helpful but I still have a problem. Yes - I have a fully
charged battery. The starter button has been sprayed with contact cleaner and
when pressed, a slight click is felt in the starter solenoid. If I jump across
the solenoid post, it fires right up. If I bench test the solenoid, it works
fine. It appears to me, and believe me I am no electrician, that I am not
getting enough power to the solenoid when i press the starter button. There is 6
volts when I test the y/r wire and if I ground the y/r at the handlebar (open
the switch up), the starter fires right up. The neutral switch is working as the
light in the speedo lights up and if I press the starter button with the neutral
light off, no click is felt in the solenoid.

What am I missing?
