[Honda-C70] What is a rectifier and what does it do?

Mike asked "What is a rectifier and what does it do? How does a two wire one do the same thing as a 4 wire one?

Its a one-way electrical "valve" found on most bikes with a battery.

The rectifier reroutes electricity generated in the alternator,
which is rapidly flowing back and forth (AC or Alternating Current)
to
flowing only in one direction (DC or Direct Current).

Batteries charge using DC, thus the need for rectifiers.

Check the animations on our website:

Some bikes have alternators with one wire out.
A 2-wire rectifier is used (one wire takes AC in, one wire puts DC out).

Some bikes have alternators with 2 wires out.
A 4-wire rectifier connects to the 2 alternator wires, then chassis ground and battery positive.

As a reference, many larger bikes have 3-wire alternators and the rectifier sports 5 or more wires.
