Hello Maggie,
Make sure Larry doesn't read this site! Now read the shop manual, study the part lists, and when Larry is asleep, you sneak out to wherever the motorcycles are and do a little hit n run tinkering maintenance adjusting whatever. Take digital pictures, close ups of before, post here, we will advise, then after. If you have to start the engine up, point the exhaust away from where Larry is sleeping :) Perhaps create a sound/audio diversion first: classical music, recording of Harley exhaust noises, whatever, to mask your evil deeds :D
Don't quite understand Bill's 'extracting a kick starter seal 'in situo' with wood/sheet metal screws? Seems easier to take the side cover off to do the job easier (side cover gasket may be needed). But to do that you may have to take other stuff off. There is no easy way.
The idea I think is that those oil seals have a metal band embedded in the outside part to make a really snug fit in the cover, and a spring around the inner opening to make a snug fit on the shaft. If the shaft is scratched where the seal sits it is not good for the seal obviously...
