[Honda-C70] Re: four head nuts

Hello ?

Don't know what model C70 (?) you have there, but looking here at US versions, generally there are crowned/cap and regular nuts on the long cylinder stud bolts.

Looking at
http://f1.grp.yahoofs.com/v1/4LwyTm8PXh8Y3wFXYcWnmDpdTiKgXqv4Kb1t52kiRRP2FY42ujBIAsZ1MsSrUl4Hc_kT67GUM1QRcxdyGrlDqla5qA/C70%20Parts%20Manuals/1983%20C70%20Parts%20Manual.pdf
in the files section of this group, at the '82-83 C70, page 18 & 19, the cylinder stud bolts 'A' & 'B', part numbers 90031-035-010 & 90032-035-000 are very popular items, used on lots of machines.

The nuts, on page 24 & 25, 90230-087-000 & 94021-06000 are also very popular and should be available for very little money.

First question is what is turning, and what is stationary? Maybe the nut or threads at the top are stripped and the stud is still secure in the crankcase? Maybe the nut is frozen on the stud, and the stud is stripped somehow in the crankcase (that would be bad).

Yes, a torque wrench is good for evenly tightening, in a criss-cross pattern, slowly, when mounting cylinder, head and cover, etc.

You can see good information on tightening in the C50-65-70 shop manual, free here and elsewhere, page 14. Of course I like my site
http://lostabout.com/c70_65_50_manual/

Since we are talking 6mm bolts, the torque generally should be ~5.8 - 8.7 ft-lbs (90 - 110 kg-cm) more or less, say 7 ft-lbs.

Of course the threads of the bolt and nut where they meet should be clean so that you are not measuring dirt by mistake. Some people clean and lightly oil the threads and go for the higher values. Some, like me, will 'chase' the threads, since I have seen so many nuts and bolts/screws whose threads have been mangled or butchered! :)
