gee dunno! The choke not snapping open might be that the watch spring on the out side of the carb isn`t hooked correctly . I remember having trouble getting it hooked right after I cleaned my carb. The spring should hold the choke plate flat or open & the cable over ride it to close but the choke plate will still float open with air rushing in [or the tip of your finger] so that the motor can rev with the choke on when cold. On the carb cleaning . 80/81 `s have a pressed in idle jet that Mike G ,the moderator, said no replacements were ever made for. You can remove it by careful wiggling it out with pliers. The jet hole is so small that the only wire I have found that fits is a brass wire from a BBQ grill brush. So I hope that the guitar wire was as small so you didn`t drill your jet out to a richer size with the steel wire. Last the information you typed didn`t paint a picture for me that had an " ah ha " moment that said " I know that , maybe I can help ". Sorry. Good Luck ! My 81 C70 was idling really high and not responding to the idle or mixture screws. So I finally got brave and took the carb apart (first time). Cleaned out the jets w/ guitar wire, etc.

Put it back together and it wouldn't start. Had spark -- had gas, but not so much as a sputter. Charged the battery... nothing. Tried a few days later -- nothing. Then, today (several days later) I turned it over a few times and it roared to life. Ran really nice too! Idled nice and low. Sounded like the carb cleaning worked. Didn't try to drive it -- ran for about 2 minutes. I was, of course delighted... but then a couple hours later I tried and she won't start again.

What would be your first plan of attack?

I posted this a couple weeks ago, and either it was insanely hard, or so easy it didn't merit a response -- cause I didn't get even so much as a "gee, dunno."
