Fellow college student here. I say ride that thing! I've got one that I ride everywhere! Though I've modified it a lot, to keep me safe on these unsafe roads where I live. It'll get you lots of attention that's for sure.
Just be sure that you've got all the paperwork in order for the title and whatnot. It might be a bit expensive to title, least it was for me since I had to go through the bonded title procedure and the state charged it with a standard value of $6000 since it was older than 25 years old - so all my taxes and my surety bond were based off of a $6000 value... "but the bill of sale only says $640!", "Too bad".
And do find a good lock! Worst thing that can ever happen is to have your ride disappear. I haven't done so yet either, but the thought always looms in my head. I need to get on that.
Even if you ride it, if you keep it nice and don't break it then somewhere down the line you can still sell it if you want to. Lots of these bikes that are in good condition can sell for over 1000 even if they've got well over 3000 mi on them. And if you do wreck it, who cares, part it out on ebay. Just about everyone who owns these bikes in North America relies on zombie parts.
Hope that little bit helps in your decision. If it runs, ride it!
