I don't think it's so much that the battery can't power the headlight, but that it's not hooked up electronically to do so. The battery is something like 3 amp 6V and the headlight is about 25 watt.
Watts = Amps x Volts
so
25 = Draw Amps x 6volts
25 / 6 = draw amps
That's 4 amps, damn more than I expected. In any event the battery could power the headlight for at least a half hour, but it's just not wired to do that. Instead I think it sips voltage from the alternator with the battery pulling off the voltage overages to charge itself.
