I've mentioned before on list, that my first 'motorcycle' 25+ years ago, was
an even-then vintage mid 60's Honda C65 Cub, at the relatively tender age of
17. I only rode it on road for a season, before moving up at the insistence
of my father to something with more power to prevent from being road-pizza'd
by other inconsiderate motorists. Even so, that C65 lingered in my garage
for the next 7-8 years, unused, but no less unappreciated for it's classic
styling. It was only in a fit of financial desperation to scrape a few
dollars together for something else, that the C65 left in the hands of a new
owner, and that was to be regretted within a few minutes of it leaving.
Back then, even the relatively current C70 Passports weren't seen very often
in the late '80s around here. As such, people always commented on my C65 ..
"I haven't seen one of them in years!" .. every ride around town back then,
without fail.
I've since acquired 2 C70's in the past year I justify them as my
'mid-life crisis on the cheap'. One that I'm currently finishing up and
intend to put on the road in the next few weeks. as a cosmetically hopped-up
local runabout at a time when gas prices are at an all time high, and my
pickup truck causes feelings of anxiety every time the fuel gauge needle
heads towards 'E'. The other, I use as an unlicensed shopping mall hack (I
live right next door to a small mall, no roads required) and I wanted a C70
that was stealthy quiet to do so. Every time that I do a store run with the
unlicensed '81 it never fails to draw a look or two and favorable comments
from people, even in it's well worn, 20 year 'barn fresh' paint appearance.
That all said, it comes down to using the appropriate tool for the task. If
I need to do something that will require keeping up with traffic that
exceeds what the Passport can do it will stay home. Un-bent, un-stressed,
and still there for when it's safe to take out, without worry about getting
me, or it, broken. For myself, it's just as much about nostalgia and an
affordable classic and attractive bike design, as it is about the ride. The
destination is very much a distant third.
The whole point of the above literary diarrhea? Suggestions that 'drafting'
trucks to keep up, and making radical changes to a bike design that is over
a 50 years old in order to modernize it to present day traffic conditions
are all moot, indeed daft when something else will do the job better
often for less money involved, and much more safely. I'm not saying that
one should keep a C70 stock, or worship it as a 100 points restoration
after all there is/was 60 million of these freaking things out there in
various versions just recognize that they have limitations in today's
modern world, and consider your transportation options carefully, with
safety foremost in mind.
55 mph .. it's achievable, I guess .. but with a heck of a lot of time and
money involved. Chances are, you'll still be disappointed by the results,
in light of something else that'd do it for far less time and money
involved. But, whatever floats yer boat...
Baby Huey is bang on the money with his comment, IMHO.

It is strange that almost the first question I am asked about my passports
around town are "How fast does it go?" then from new owners "how can I make
it go faster".
A good Running classic passport can cost as much as faster newer used
motorcycle, Obviously we are not in it for the speed.
I keep mine for the nostalgia and to own a bit of working history, plus the
eclectic look and feel of owning something that is usually much older than
the person asking about it.
In a world of throw away plastic and video games , to see good quality and
craftsmanship still in use after all these years will turn heads and lend a
blast from the past.
A nice looking passport will usually gather a crowd at scooter rallies and
meet-ups rides. I often hear from organisers that "we even have a old honda
passport in our group" when recruiting new members.
Its not about speed but about getting thier in style.
A honda passport parked, in itself is a thing of beauty at zero miles per
hour.

they will tell some one to go to the airport & stand behind jets taking off
for a quick tan [extra crispy] . The days of 50`s 70`s & 90`s being learner
bikes are gone . If you need 55MPH you need a 250cc or larger bike just to
not be run over by an SUV driver on their cell phone. Baby Huey`s 2 cents

large semi-trucks good for drafting aren't commonly found just toodling
around the city. In order to catch one you'd have to jump on the expressway
and get up to 55 or so...kind of a catch-22.
