RE: [Honda-C70] 1981 C70 Passport - Getting it Started..

John : Glad to hear you are solving some problems . The next thing to learn may be whether you have an 81 or an 82 so that you are using the guides at the bottom of the page for YOUR bike . 82 & newer have different guides for the things that are different from all older years. The 82 has a round air filter that I have read can be very hard to remove from its rubber boot . The fuel petcock has off , on or main ,& reserve. The handle does NOT point to your selected choice ,the small pointer in the center goes. And that can be wrong if someone pulled the fuel lines off to drain the tank & switched them by mistake when they re attached them . And DO make it part of your start /stop drill to turn the gas on with the petcock when you start & off when you stop the motor for more that a short time. If you leave the petcock on all the time you run the risk that someday the float will stick & all your gas will leak onto the ground ,or worse yet into the motor . Good Luck! Baby Huey

>>I have an '82 C70 that isn't starting. I'm changing the plug today and have recharged the battery. I have fuel ruining out when I adjust the drain screw. >>My question I have two hoses coming from the gas tank running into the carb at the toggle valve switch. Should both hoses be filled with fuel? Also, >>what are the various position the valve can be in? I've looked in the manual but can't find the different positions<<

The verdict is in. I was low on gas (below the regular tank fill). I put fuel in the tank, changed the spark plug, used some starting fluid in the air cleaner and the cycle runs now. I still have a problem with it shutting down at idle so tomorrow, weather permitting, I'm plan to adjust the idle speed with the throttle stop screw. The manual says a tachometer in necessary but, since I don't have one, can I adjust it based on increasing idle speed?

Also, when I looked at the air cleaner ,mine is round vs. the square one shown in the manual. I tried to pull it out and it appears to be stuck. Not wanting to break it I left it alone. Is there something holding the airlifter in?

Thanks for all your help and ideas. They gave me confidence to try the repairs myself.
