A super-fast stab of the lever works too, whether you release the
throttle or not, since the shift lever IS the clutch lever.

Since you can't shift without working the clutch at the same time -
YOU CAN'T HURT THE TRANSMISSION.

Play around with it.

With some practice you can upshift pretty smoothly, even at redline
in each gear.

Downshifting is MUCH easier at idle, but can be done smoothly at
higher speed with a little help from the throttle and slipping the
clutch with a slow release of the shift lever.

Keep in mind that the heel-and-toe shift lever is designed to be
manipulated with your foot on top - and only in the last few decades
did they change it with a round front end to accept the toe UNDER the
front.

If you foot fits better on top - try shifting that way. Use your heel more.

I occasionally will upshift using my toe on the heel end of the lever
- to get an extra-fast stab (faster than I can get my toe underneath
and pull up). It looks funny to have one foot off the pegs completely
between shifts, but it works for me.

Have fun.
