I have very good luck with those kits from Eastwood. A bit involved but it does really clean out the tank from everything that could be in there. You then coat the inside of it with a chemical that makes it look like the inside of a Coleman cooler. I did one over 9 years ago and it is still doing just fine. You do have to use some acetone and muriatic acid but just where some good rubber household gloves and you will be fine. and do it outdoors!Michael

That old gunk is probably an old tank coating like your considering putting on. I don't think I'd recommend any of the tank coatings. Clean the old tank well and keep gas in it and you should be fine.
