RE: [Honda-C70] 1981 C70 Passport - Sprocket Bolt Question

Chris : I went to bikebandit & the bolts were not listed as discontinued so they may [cross your fingers ] be available at a Honda shop . The only other suggestion I have is make a socket ,6 sided not 12 , that you grind , file ,or sand the opening of the socket until the rounded off chamfer of the socket is gone & the socket has sharp edges that will be harder to get a bolt head into but will hold with less chance of slipping. Your rounded out bolt heads may be too late for a modified socket . But new bolts could benefit from a 6 sided socket that fits tightly at the very least. Good Luck ! Baby Huey

Hi Baby Huey and Bill,

Yes, I'm thinking that the bolts were not torqued all the way and the washer with
bendable tabs eventually came loose. The only problem now is that these OEM bolts are out
of stock at dratv and bike bandit and two of my bolt heads are almost rounded out, making it impossible
to torque correctly.

Do either of you know where they can be found? It's tough for me to miss riding this time of year on the ferry
with so many tourists. It was a 3 hour commute last Friday without my Honda!

Thanks,

Chris

If you look at the bolt, you will see that the head is not as tall as normal bolts.
That is because there really is not that much room to work with.

The bolt should not come loose, if it does it means one a only a few things.
1. you did not torgue the bolt tight enough. You need to use a torque wrench.
2. you used a low tensial bolt and it streached.
3. the surface was to true or dirtly and the sprocket was not flat against the aluminum
drive adapter and it moved till it wore the surface and the bolt came loose.

Yes the bolt is hard to tighten, and yes the flate "C" shaped tab washer is hard to find
and Honda now uses a two sided serated washer. I am not to sure I like the design but that
is what we work with.

Chris : Are you talking about the washer under the bolt that you are supposed to bend the side up against the flat of the bolt to lock it in place ? If you can get the correct hardened bolts from a store you should be OK to use them . But you don`t want regular soft bolts that might snap off jam the sprocket & chain & send your back wheel sliding down the road . Even if you like to live dangerously the person behind you may not want to run over you . Baby Huey

Subject: [Honda-C70] 1981 C70 Passport - Sprocket Bolt Question

Hi,

Recently my sprocket bolts have been coming loose. The first couple of years riding this did not happen. A couple of the bolt heads are stripped out now and dratv only had two available when I ordered new ones a few weeks ago. My questions are as follows:

Is there some trick to keeping these tight? It seems a socket will not fit with the "washer" underneath for tightening and only a wrench will work.

Will some type of thread lock work or is that just causing trouble down the road?

Is it okay to get a similar size bolt from the bolt store or is it better to use the OEM bolt?

Thanks,

Chris
