Hard to say what could cause the speedometer to abruptly stop. One hopes the fix is something simple, easy and cheap or free!?
The front wheel has a gear in the hub, that turns a worm gear in the brake panel, that turns a speedometer cable that goes into the speedometer, that turns both the odometer and speedometer.
So it looks like your problem is outside of the speedometer, which is good!
The questions are. Is the cable properly connected at both ends? If not then connecting it might fix it? If it is, then the question is what isn't turning when the front wheel turns?
You can go any way you want here, but perhaps you might start by looking at the speedometer end of the cable. Traditionally, the speedometer cable turn counterclockwise (looking into the speedometer) when the front wheel goes forward.
Does the cable turn when the wheel turns? If so then reconnect to speedometer and tell us what happens! If not, then why? As Bill says, is the cable broken in the middle somewhere? If not then you must disconnect it from the brake hub. Now the slot in the cable engages a tang on the worm gear. Is there a tang? Is there a slot? Does the tang turn when the wheel turns? If not then the worm gear is not being turned by the gear in the hub? You would need to take off the front wheel to get at the hub innerards. The gear has tangs which fit into the hub. Your sudden failure suggest that this is not where the problem is?
Depending upon what you find, you must determine what part is not properly working/connected, etc. Let us know what you find.
