| Flying Lizard Porsches Qualify Third and Sixth in GT for Lime Rock Posted: 08 Jul 2011 02:13 PM PDT Patrick Long qualified the No. 45 Flying Lizard Porsche third in GT today and Marco Holzer was sixth in the No. 44 in qualifying for the Northeast Grand Prix at Lime Rock Park. Joerg Bergmeister will join Patrick in the No. 45 and Seth Neiman will team with Marco in the No. 44 for the race, which gets the green flag at 2:05 pm ET on Saturday. The No. 56 BMW is on the GT pole. Long gave his perspective on the session, “We’re pleased with the result today. I had come into the pits after setting the third-fastest time of 51.872; we considered going back out but the margin to first and second was enough that on a track this short we knew that we had reached our potential for today. It will definitely be a fight tomorrow. Tire wear is going to be one of the main deciding factors: the cars that manage their tires well will have the advantage. I’m confident we’ll have a fast, balanced car for the race tomorrow.” Marco Holzer drove at Lime Rock for the first time today; it’s his first run here and only his second ALMS race. (He drove with the Lizards at Sebring in March.) Holzer added, “I set my qualifying time on my seventh dry lap ever at this circuit. We are happy with sixth: my time of the gap to Patrick in P3 is just over one-tenth. I’m very happy to be back with the Lizards – the guys did a great job with very little tracktime in giving us a solid racecar for tomorrow.” Heading into the third of nine ALMS races, Bergmeister and Long are tenth in the drivers’ championship; Law and Neiman are ninth and Holzer is eleventh. Flying Lizard is fourth in the team championship. - Flying Lizard Motorsport Related posts: Flying Lizard Porsches Qualify Third and Sixth in GT for Lime Rock |
| Audi announces pricing for 2012 MY TT RS Posted: 08 Jul 2011 11:54 AM PDT Audi of America today announced pricing for the much anticipated Audi TT RS. The 2012 TT RS is the pinnacle of the TT model line, and signifies the return of the RS nameplate to the U.S. The RS nameplate represents the highest performance category for Audi vehicles, and reflects the technical competencies gained through Audi motorsports successes. The Audi TT RS will be priced at $56,850 (excluding destination charges, taxes, title, options and dealer charges). The Audi TT RS is powered by the award-winning 2.5 liter turbocharged five-cylinder TFSI engine that generates 360 hp and 343 lb-ft of torque between 1,650 and 5,400 rpm for power on demand. All engine components have been designed to cope with extreme loads and the demands of a thoroughbred sports engine. Forged six-bearing crankshaft, weight optimized connection rods, sodium cooled exhaust valves and lightweight pistons with specifically adapted ring assembly are indicative of the elements engineered into the TT RS.
The combination of FSI® injection and a high-efficiency turbocharger result in optimum combustion, superior power and rapid buildup of boost pressure even at low speeds. The engine is mated to a six-speed manual transmission and quattro® all-wheel drive is standard. An automatic transmission is not available for the TT RS. The Audi TT RS accelerates from 0 – 60 mph in only 4.1 seconds, making it the fastest in its class. Audi magnetic ride is standard on the TT RS, which allows the suspension characteristic to be actively altered; the driver benefits as the system constantly adapts to the current driving situation. A sport mode stiffens the magnetic ride, enhances throttle responsiveness, and activates a more striking engine sound via flaps in the exhaust system. The aluminum and steel hybrid ASF® technology also found on the TT and TTS models, reduces weight while helping increase rigidity and safety. The coupe space frame is made up of 69% aluminum and 31% steel which makes it 48% lighter than a full steel frame. The ASF technology allows the TT RS to weigh a respectable 3,306 lbs. The Audi TT RS offers excellent aerodynamics with a drag coefficient of 0.32 due to its optimized silhouette and smooth vehicle underbody. The Audi TT RS features exclusive design elements denoting its special place at the top of the TT model line. The high gloss black diamond-patterned Singleframe® grille and large front air inlets give notice of the vehicles performance, as does the fixed rear wing spoiler that provides increased down force. Oval exhaust pipes, rear diffuser, unique 19” rotor wheels, prominent body sills and exterior mirror housings in matte aluminum finish round out the RS-specific design elements. The interior of the Audi TT RS also features RS-exclusive appointments, such as the contoured 3-spoke sport multifunction steering wheel, aluminum door sills with the RS logo, and RS-specific interior door handles. Other interior features include 10-way power sport front seats with three-step heating, leather seat coverings, brushed aluminum interior inlays, and available LED ambient lighting. The Audi TT RS offers electronic features one expects from Audi, including Audi concert radio with single CD player and MP3 reading capability, and AM / FM / SAT radio with a complimentary 3-month subscription to SiriusXM® Satellite Radio. Available advanced electronics offer an increased level of sophistication for the premium sports car, including technologies like Audi navigation plus with real time traffic, MMI® inspired controls, a BOSE® sound system, and Audi music interface. The 2012 Audi TT RS is a unique car that will appeal to Audi enthusiasts and performance vehicle purists alike. The Audi TT RS goes on sale this summer. | Porsche Napleton Racing, David Heinemeier Hansson head to Lime Rock Posted: 08 Jul 2011 08:01 AM PDT Porsche Napleton Racing (PNR) and driver David Heinemeier Hansson will return to IMSA GT3 Cup Challenge by Yokohama action in the No. 37 PNR / 37signals Porsche GT3 this weekend at Lime Rock Park in the Northeast Grand Prix, July 8 – 9. Saturday’s doubleheader features the day’s first race at 10:25 a.m. before a second sprint following the featured ALMS event at 5:00 p.m. Hansson and PNR haven’t raced in the GT3 Cup Challenge in over two months but they will still carry some momentum from their season-best fourth-place overall and Platinum Cup Class finish on May 1 at Miller Motorsports Park, the last time they took the green flag. Hansson is ready to go for this weekend.
Although the only GT3 Cup race missed in the two-month time span after Utah was Montreal – the team is not contesting the pair of Canadian races on the 2011 schedule – Hansson stayed sharp with some racing in Europe, nearly scoring a victory. “It’s been a while even though I’ve been keeping busy racing Radicals in Europe,” Hansson said. “In the latest race at Imola in Italy, as a support race of the 6 hour ILMC race, I would have finished first in the last race if not for a fuel-pump issue on the very last lap.” Hansson and the PNR team have had a competitive 37signals Porsche in each of the opening double-header rounds of the 2011 GT3 Cup season, but not always the results to show for it. They scored a strong sixth in the team’s series debut in the season-opening race at Sebring in March only to be taken out the following day after competitor contact at the race start. Another blow from the same competitor dropped Hansson and the PNR team from contention at the start of Saturday’s first race at Miller before they recovered for the season-best result on Sunday. Putting a pair of strong races together at Lime Rock is one of the main goals for what will be a tight weekend. The two-day event marks the first time this season the GT3 Cup Challenge will run a pair of races on the same day. The IMSA GT3 Cup Challenge by Yokohama features semi-professional and emerging drivers racing head to head in Porsche 911 GT3 Cup race cars. The series is broken into two classes, with the Platinum Cup class featuring newer and more powerful Porsche GT3s and the Gold Cup class for 2005½ to 2009 specification GT3s. Friday’s opening day of activity includes practice and qualifying. Race-day Saturday begins with the first 45-minute sprint at 10:25 a.m. while the second GT3 Cup race the weekend’s overall racing schedule at 5 p.m. Related posts: Porsche Napleton Racing, David Heinemeier Hansson head to Lime Rock |
| Trackspeed’s Ashburn & Westbrook top second practice at Spa-Francorchamps Posted: 08 Jul 2011 07:30 AM PDT The Trackspeed Porsche of reigning Avon Tyres British GT Champion David Ashburn and his co-driver Richard Westbrook emerged on top of the times in the second session of free practice at Spa-Francorchamps. Though their best of 2m 23.490s was half a second shy of this morning’s ultimate lap by Matt Griffin in the MTech Ferrari, the Porsche men nonetheless beat their closest rivals, Hector Lester and Allan Simonsen in their Rosso Verde Ferrari, by just over a tenth to claim the honors in what was generally a slower session. The second Trackspeed Porsche, in the hands of Gregor Fisken and Tim Bridgman, matched their morning session pace to go third quickest ahead of Cameron and Griffin. Championship leaders Mike Guasch and Matt Bell were a problem-free fifth; their United Autosports Audi team-mates John Bintcliffe and Jay Palmer missed the session with clutch problems, however. Another non-appearance came from the Predator CCTV Ferrari of Phil Burton and Adam Wilcox; their car is undergoing a clutch change and they hope to be fighting fit for qualifying later this afternoon. | Trackspeed Porsche’s 3rd & 4th in first practice from Spa Posted: 08 Jul 2011 06:55 AM PDT The MTech Ferrari of Matt Griffin and Duncan Cameron led the way in the first free practice session of the Spa-Francorchamps Avon Tyres British GT Championship weekend, Griffin hustling his 458 Italia around the Belgian Grand Prix circuit in a best time of 2m 23.070s, some 1.6s inside last year’s best qualifying time. Griffin was six-tenths ahead of the new McLaren MP4-12C, which is making its international racing debut this weekend with British GT. Said Matt: “We are quicker than the McLaren, which is pleasing. The car is going well; in fact, it feels as if it is on rails around here, so things are looking good. But we always seem to start the weekends well, and there is a long way to go yet…” The McLaren, which is driven by Chris Goodwin and Andrew Kirkaldy, set a best of 2m 23.637s. The Trackspeed Porsches claimed third and fourth on the timesheets, with the David Ashburn/Richard Westbrook 911 on 2m 24.283s and Gregor Fisken/Tim Bridgman on 2m 24.752s. There were dramas for the Preci-Spark Mercedes of David and Godfrey Jones and the Predator CCTV Ferrari of Phil Burton and Adam Wilcox. The Jones car spun at the top of Eau Rouge and couldn’t be restarted, missing the second half of the session, while Burton and Wilcox failed to set a representative time due to suspected clutch problems. In GT4, the Peter Erceg/Chris Holmes Secure Racing/Barwell Motorsport Aston Martin led the way by more than a second from the Scuderia Vittoria Ginetta of Dan Denis and David McDonald. | Report: Audi denied TDI trademark by European court Posted: 08 Jul 2011 06:31 AM PDT As much as it has with the Quattro brand, Audi (and its parent company Volkswagen) have more recently turned the letters TDI into an emblem of what it stands for as an automaker. Think of those three letters and you could picture no other marque, that’s how closely intertwined the two have become. But an attempt to enshrine that much in law has apparently failed. According to Autobild, Audi went to the European Union courts in Luxembourg – on behalf of its parent company as well in its own right – to secure dominion over the TDI badge, but in a ruling this week, the judge ruled that the acronym is not theirs alone. Apparently the judge felt that the letters apply to a technology that is common with other automakers – namely turbocharged diesels with direct injection – and therefore rejected Audi’s claim of ownership. The company apparently owns the name in individual countries, so any attempt by a rival automaker to use the name would undoubtedly prove difficult. But as far as the European Union is concerned, it’s not illegal. - Autoblog Related posts: Report: Audi denied TDI trademark by European court |
