RE: [Honda-C70] Re: Why won't it start? What am I missing? Please help.

Chris : I hope Jon doesn`t mind if I piggy back on his Email.
Last night just before I fell asleep I had a ah ha moment. He replaced bent forks on an 83 & Mike G said to disconnect the key switch to check for a flaky ground . My 81 has a metal strip on the ignition switch mounting tab that makes a solid ground into the frame on the side of the steering head. How does an 82/83 get any ground through the steering ball bearing to ground the handle bars ? Might be a ground wire missing there somewhere . After 4 months of tying everything I could think of to get spark at the points & plug on my 81 I gave up & hauled it to a shop. Told him everything I tried & changed . He said it is probably something" stupid simple". He checked the plug cap got high ohm`s . Put on new cap . Checked points & said they seamed glazed ,cleaned with brake cleaner on a rag. It started for him on the second kick. I wonder if that means I am simple or stupid or both for not taking it to a pro sooner. Good Luck ! Baby Huey

Chris,

I have followed your posts and the replies carefully, but am a little bit confused on a couple of things. You have essentially replaced the entire ignition system and still have no spark. Mike G. has pointed to the possibility the ignition switch and/or wiring could be suspect.

Do you have a electrical multimeter, or can you obtain one and run some basic tests and measurements? Since your bike was wrecked, it may have a short in the wiring. You have replaced most of the parts but I have not seen you report any test findings. A professional mechanic is going to run several simple tests to diagnose and locate the problem. No need to know any theory to run the tests, just the ability to observe.

In my files folder is the document for testing CDI.

First test I would run:
Verify my Voltmeter works correctly, disconnect stator, connect AC Voltmeter to stator wiring (as shown in test document). One lead to Black/Red wire from stator, the other to engine ground. Turn engine over, measure AC Volts that feed the CDI. Get anything?

If you can measure with a meter, we can likely figure it out.
