This may be a stupid question but are you sure your speedo is dead and it's not just the speedometer cable that needs replacing? The symptoms sound almost as if your cable has broken and that both sides of the broken cable mesh from time to time to get the needle to move a bit. I have experienced this firsthand before.
Also, regarding the tires, you are halfway correct. The size of the tire on the rear has no affect on what the speedometer reads, however, if you run anything other than a stock 2.25x17, your speedometer will say you are going slower than you really are. I run a 2.25 on the front and a 3.0 on the rear and I love the stability I feel it has with a 3.0 on the rear.
As for the speedo being overloaded. I myself have never heard of this but that is not to say it can't happen. No definitive answer from me there, sorry.
