Hi, I'm new to this group and not very mechanically inclined, however I was hoping to get some advice about a problem that just occurred with my 83 passport tonight. I want to see if there is any possibility of me (with little to no knowledge of my passport's mechanics) fixing the problem or if it'd be better for me to take it to a professional.
Problem: My front and rear turning signals, neutral light, signal indicator light and brake lights all stopped working at the same time. My headlight is still working however and my electric starter never was working.
Situation and possible explanation: My two rear turning signal lights were out, so I figured I could buy new bulbs and replace them myself. I went to an auto supply store with one of the burnt out light bulbs and asked if they had a replacement bulb, they gave me two replacement bulbs, but I didn't double check that they were the same number, and they weren't. The new bulbs were 1156 (12.8v, 26.9W), but my existing bulbs were 1073 (12.8v, 23w). But the new bulbs worked fine for about a week until today. I let my passport idle for longer than usual without giving it gas (second possible explanation), but it didn't die and I rode it home, but when I got home I noticed the neutral light wasn't working, then I checked the signals and they weren't working either.
So I checked out some postings on electrical probs on this group and thought it might be the fuse, so I located the fuse and took it out, but upon inspection it looked fine and wasn't broken, so I put it back in. Should I replace it anyway?
Any ideas what could be wrong? Is it possible that by inserting the incorrect bulb, I messed something up? I checked the turning signal bulbs and they don't appear to be blown. Could it be the battery? The battery is a little over a year old, so I would think it would still be good, but maybe by idling too long I drained it? Any other fairly simple things I should check?
Any help or recommendations would be greatly appreciated.
