Paul : Try cleaning your idle jet & passages . The idle jet on 80/81 is press fit not screw in & Mike G said there were never any replacements made . So you clean it or replace the whole carb. You can pop the jet out with a pliers . The only thing I have found that will fit through the idle jet is the brass wire from a BBQ grill brush. The hole you see on the end of the jet is NOT the jet hole. The other things besides the" races in neutral "can be your points have worn closed enough to not let the coil recharge between plug fires. All of this is a lot cheaper than a new carb. How ever I replaced my carb with the 80/81 carb from dratv at about 15K miles because my OEM carb had started sticking at full throttle when cold. Having my bike rev UP for 2 seconds when I closed the throttle in rush hour traffic with 1200 washing machine factory workers all leaving work was not the way I wanted to die. The new carb ran perfect right out of the box , no adjustment needed . That is my 2 cents . Good Luck ! Baby Huey

My 81 sat for a long time and it runs, but tempermentally. Races in neutral, bogs when hot, surges at speed, starts great cold, not so well hot, etc. All carb issues. The bike had 4700 miles and a broken odometer and was last registered in 1986 (but might have been ridden off-road for all I know). But it doesn't blow smoke and has good compression, so it's not like the engine is on its last legs or anything.

My question, of course, is what is the life expectancy on a carb? I know I can save a few bucks and get a gasket kit and jets, but at what point do you say it's not worth the trouble to rebuild and just get a new one? I have seen kits for $25 and up, and whole new carbs for $45!

And if I should go new, any recommendations for someone who is relatively poor but not unwilling to spend a little cash to insure that I at least get OEM performance (if not and OEM carb).
