[Honda-C70] Re: A Better Battery

Hello ?

The idea is to match the Amp Hour rating of the lead acid battery one is replacing. So a 2 AH lead acid would like a 2 AH NiMH or NICad, (i.i 2,000 mAH), say

or some such. Note how the price escalates when you need 5 for 7.2V at 2.5 AH, ~$25. Now if you need 5AH, do another 5 in parallel, you're talking $50, and if you have an 6V 11AH C70 battery, can you say ~$100. And where do you put all that volume! That is the thing about lead acid, it has a good power to volume ratio, but heavy. Better power to volume and weight are what the RC (remote control) cars, model planes etc. use, which is LiPo (lithium polymer) or Lithium ion batteries. These are what are in current laptops, cell hones, PDAs, cameras, etc. etc.
A couple of these babies...

Of course one needs more controlled charging for any of these replacement batteries, NiCad, NiMH, LiPO, etc. than is afforded by the Honda designs of 40 years ago. Limiting the voltage to the battery isn't hard, but limiting the current and the time is not so easy!

Jon Pardue may chime in here :D
