Maybe I'm confused but if you have an '80 you need a 6 volt bulb, unless you or a previous owner totally changed the entire electrical system to 12. A 12 volt bulb might glow dimly in your system, but it sure won't work as a headlight. It's not an either or choice for you.
The '80 is a sealed beam and you either need to change it for a different assembly that allows you to change the bulb alone, or ... get another complete plug and play sealed beam from DRATV or similar.
