| Ultra Evolution “Summer JAM” Car Show Orlando, FL Route 46 Presented by NOS Posted: 17 Aug 2011 05:42 AM PDT This past Saturday our Orlando, FL based photographer Brandon Connelly headed out to Route 46 Entertainment District, home of Orlando’s Cars & Cafe every month, for the Ultra Evolution: Summer Jam car show. The show was a hot one with temperatures as of late reaching the near 100s and we can say we were lucky enough to escape the rain as well! However, the heat did not keep the true car enthusiasts away as many decided to brave the heat and either show their cars or just check out the show. Cars were parked as tight as possible since R46 isn’t exactly the largest of areas but none the less, it was a nice turnout of rides. Everything from an Ariel Atom from Real Street Performance to some very clean imports of all makes along with some nice domestics showed up. Another nice thing about the show was that it brought in crews and teams from Jacksonville, Tampa, Ocala and other areas of Florida. A big thanks to Ultra Evolution for putting on this show as well as all the vendors and other patrons, including the FloridaLancers.com crew, who survived the day to make this event happen. Enjoy the exclusive images below from our photographer Brandon Connelly. View additional images on Brandon’s Flickr page here!

| Coming Soon: Intelligent Roads Posted: 16 Aug 2011 06:59 AM PDT Just four years ago, a ton of asphalt in liquid form was selling for $175; thanks to the increasing cost of oil, the same amount of asphalt sells for over $1,000 today. It won't be long before paving with traditional materials becomes cost-prohibitive, which raises the obvious question of "what comes next?" One enterprising Idaho company, Solar Roadways, thinks they have the answer. The company has developed a solar-panel-embedded roadway that generates electricity, heats itself to melt snow, warns drivers of changing road conditions and, eventually, pays for itself with the electricity created. It carries fiber optic cabling and power lines, so communications systems and the power grid would be much more weather-resistant than they are today. The Solar Roadway panels can even be equipped with an inductive charging system, which means that electric cars of tomorrow could have an unlimited range, charging as they drive. The panels are glass-topped, but the glass isn't the kind most people are accustomed to. The surface has the same amount of traction as asphalt, and it's designed to withstand the weight of a fully-loaded tractor trailer, under heavy braking. Since each panel is hermetically sealed, the roadways would be impervious to frost heaves, potholes and other weather-related damage. Should a panel get broken, replacing it would be similar to replacing a tile on your kitchen floor. Solar Roadways will soon have a chance to prove their concept, as the company recently received a $750,000 grant from the Federal Highway Administration to build a solar-powered parking lot. We wish Scott and Julie Brusaw and the rest of the Solar Roadways team the best of luck with their project. It isn't often that game-changing technology comes along, but this could well be it. |
| 2012 Lexus CT 200h F Sport: A Sheep In A Wolf Suit Posted: 16 Aug 2011 06:25 AM PDT As hybrids go, Lexus' CT 200h is a mixed bag. Lexus wants to sell it as a "sporty" hybrid, but at the end of the day it's a Toyota Prius with a nicer interior and a stiffer suspension. Even the "Sport" driving mode doesn't add much in the way of excitement, and aside from the occasional moped or scooter, you won't be showing tail lights to too many vehicles during a roll on. We like the CT 200h well enough (for a hybrid), but it's got as much in common with sports cars as Justin Bieber has in common with Marilyn Manson. That's why we're even more confused at Lexus' announcement of an "F Sport" kit for the 2012 Lexus CT 200h. Check that particular option box, and you'll get a revised body kit, a black-mesh grille, unique 17-inch wheels, F Sport sill plates, a leather steering wheel and shift knob, aluminum pedals and a retuned suspension. What you won't get is more power, so the F Sport CT 200h has to make do with the same 134 horsepower as the standard CT 200h. Worse, there's no option for a manual transmission; instead, the only transmission available is a CVT. We're sure the stiffer suspension will improve turn-in and maybe even lateral acceleration, but probably at the expense of ride quality. We fail to see the point of building a hybrid with a harsh ride and no improvement in braking or acceleration, just to slap an "F Sport" badge on it. Will Lexus sell them? Probably, but not to those of us who understand what "sport" really means. Source: Autoblog |
