Hi Bill,
Thanks soo much for this much needed direction and advice.
I will let you know how it goes when I get the replacement in hand before
I take the old one off.
Much appreciated.

You will have as much luck with the shop manual on this site as
the Clymer maybe even better. The 1982 is an addendum to the
1980-81 manual.
The muffler change is straight forward. Two nuts on the head holding the collar.
If you leave the rear hanger on the bike, two nuts holding the muffler to the
rear hanger. Make sure you dig the old gasket out of the head and install a
new one.

Hi William,
Yes, it is an 82' passport C70.
I will check out Dratv. Will it be easy to uninstall and install the
new OEM muffler? Just some bolts, U-bolts?
Thanks again.
Liz
P.S.---Maybe I should pick up a Clymer manual for my 82'?
Do you know if that will that show detailed instructions on the muffler assembly?

Hi Liz:
Your's is an '82 model passport, correct?
As far as I know the OEM passport muffler for at LEAST 82 onwards is a one
piece affair - the header is welded onto the muffler/megaphone assembly as
one unit. If it's noisy at that point of the muffler, that's an indication
that it's rotting there - a common point for the rust to start, and it
usually travels back towards the rear in the section of the pipe facing the
swingarm. The rust can be disguised by road deposits/tarnish, so it might
not be readily apparent. I've seen quite a few 'moldy' passports the past
few years - and all had rot in that section - including my own two.
DrAtv has the OEM'ish replacement mufflers - I have one (meant for the '82
onwards Passports but will fit earlier) on my other '81 Passport, and as I
said, it's relatively whisper quiet.

I'm looking for a whisper quiet muffler. My stock muffler sounds a little
loud
near where the muffler bolts up to the other pipe?
And yes, I'm not very versed on changed out a muffler. I understand it on a
car, but
is there a quieter muffler I can buy for my 82 C70?
Thanks.

William: That sounds like a cleaner baffle than the old " snuffer" that was
sold in the 60`s . For the younger folks , the snuffer was a flat washer
with a bolt welded to one side . You removed the stock baffle & threaded the
bolt through the stock baffle bolt hole so that the washer could ether block
or turned not block the out let of the muffler or straight pipes. Snuffed
the sound & performance at the same time as I remember. Baby Huey

I got bored today, and somewhat inspired. While trying intermittently to
get my '82 road-worthy the past few weeks along with the various 'italian
tune-up' runs through the private roads, I've been somewhat afraid of
pissing off the neighbors - all 110 of them in the condo townhouse
subdivision that I'm in, with the excessive volume of the V8 Speedsource
aftermarket exhaust.
The V8 Speedsource pipe basically turns a relatively whisper quiet C70 into
a somewhat obnoxiously loud scooter, IMHO. While I'm somewhat deaf - I'm
sure the neighbors aren't. I'd say that the volume of the exhaust was only
slightly less than what my Bandit 1200cc with a Hindle street pipe (with the
packing blown out LONG ago) puts out. Still, I'd likely have left the
exhaust alone, but for the neighbor factor.
Anyway, my fix was elegantly simple. 1/2 inch plate aluminum bar stock,
meets 1 3/4" hole saw chucked into my heavy duty drill press. About 2 hrs
working at the resulting core with both coarse and fine rasps, and I ended
up with a 1 5/8" inner diameter plug that fit in very nicely via
friction-fit and gentle tapping with a hammer to persuade it in place into
the outlet of the V8 Speedsource exhaust. I drilled out a 1/2 inch outlet
hole into the plug, and gave the bike a go.
Results - volume reduced substantially. I can actually hear the mechanical
noise of the motor again. Increased back-pressure is also making the motor
happier. The pipe still sounds great, but without the excessive
obnoxiousness, and appearance wise the mod is clean with no
drilling/affixing of the insert required. I don't think that I will now
need to re-jet for that pipe.
Cost - $0.00, with handy scrap aluminium laying about. Just time involved.
