| Honda Confirms Work On NSX Successor. Sort Of. Posted: 26 Apr 2011 09:36 AM PDT During a press conference at the Shanghai Auto Show, Honda's president, Takanobu Ito, confirmed what car enthusiasts the world over have hoped for: Honda will build a successor to the legendary NSX. Depending upon your perspective, that's where the good news ends. While Ito insists that Honda is "working very hard on it", he gave no indication of what "it" is, where "it" will be sold, when "it" will be released or even what price segment Honda is targeting for "it". Worse, another Honda representative said the car would be positioned as a high performance counterpart to the CR-Z, a car which only Honda bills as a "sports hybrid". The NSX replacement is believed to be a parallel hybrid, but Ito would only say that the car would be both exhilarating to drive and environmentally friendly. The original replacement for the Honda NSX was to be a V-10 powered, front-engine, rear drive coupe putting out some 500 horsepower. Production was killed by Honda in the midst of the global economic meltdown of 2009, but the car went on to race in Japan's Super GT series as the HSV-010 GT. Whatever the new NSX replacement morphs into, Honda needs to take a step back and examine what's most important. If that's green cars, give up on the idea of building a world class sports car. If you want a high performance halo car, scrap the parallel hybrid drivetrain and focus on a smaller displacement engine with direct injection, variable intake and exhaust cam timing and twin, sequential turbos to get reasonable performance and fuel economy. Trying to serve two masters well is an impossible task, and there's a reason why no one makes turkey giblet gravy flavored ice cream. Source: Automotive News |
| Ford Earns $2.6 Billion In Q1 2011 Posted: 26 Apr 2011 09:32 AM PDT A mix of new cars, higher transaction prices and rising domestic and European sales helped Ford Motor Company earn a profit of $2.6 billion in the first quarter of 2011. If you're keeping score, that was Ford's best first quarter performance in 12 years, and it out-shined last year's Q1 profit of just over $2 billion. Total revenue came in at $33.1 billion, which represented an increase of $5 billion over the first quarter of 2010. This latest performance shows that the auto giant is quick to learn lessons on product mix. Rising fuel prices in 2008 gave Ford a dismal performance for the year, since their product mix was heavily weighted towards trucks and SUVs. Ford still sells a lot of both, but the new F-150 and Explorer models are more fuel efficient than their predecessors. Ford's also got more fuel efficient offerings in their product line, like the 40 MPG Fiesta and the 40 MPG Focus. Even the Mustang, revamped for 2011, gets noticeably better fuel economy than the models sold in 2008. In other words, Ford offers fuel-efficient vehicles across virtually every product category, and is in a much better position to weather rising fuel prices than they were in 2008. It's not all good news in Dearborn, and Ford is advising investors to expect lower quarterly results later in the year as the automaker struggles with increasing commodity and transportation costs, seasonality and costs related to long term product plans. Still, it looks likely that the days of Ford losing money may be behind them, even if it is too early to project any kind of year end numbers. Source: Automotive News |
