One Bad-A Beetle: 2012 Volkswagen Beetle R Rendered & Speculated

Posted: 22 Apr 2011 05:36 AM PDT

Luis Baston, of Kane Design, sent in renderings of what Car and Drivers speculates would be a new 2012 VW Beetle R introduced with a 266 horsepower and 258 pounds-feet of torque turbocharged 2.0-liter engine.

The new 2012 Volkswagen Beetle is truly a remarkable design taking cues from the old-school ragtop Bug. New speculations have surfaced with an introduction of a Beetle R version that will have a convertible variant introduced for 2013 model year sporting the same turbocharged engine.

Check out the two renderings from Luis Baston, one of which wears a set of concave Vossen Wheels.

Can Kia Save Its Soul?

Posted: 21 Apr 2011 01:09 PM PDT

The 2012 Kia Soul. Image: Kia Motors

Kia's funky urban utility vehicle, the Soul, was introduced to the market in 2009, late to the party started by the Scion xB and the Nissan cube. To make up lost ground, Kia launched an ingenious marketing campaign featuring hip-hop hamsters, and suddenly Kia's box-on-wheels was everywhere. To keep it fresh, Kia released a series of limited production "special editions", like the Soul Denim and the Ghost Soul, but these were largely paint and trim packages. As cool as the Soul was, it lacked power and suffered from less-than-optimal fuel economy, so the company routinely lost buyers to Nissan and Scion.

That's about to change, since Kia is launching a substantial mid-cycle refresh for the 2012 Kia Soul. First up is more power from the base engine, courtesy of a new 1.6-liter gasoline direct injection engine. Horsepower jumps from 122 in the 2011 Soul to 135 in the 2012 model, but fuel economy also increases. The current Soul gets 26 mpg city and 31 mpg highway, while the new version is rated at 28 city and 34 highway. If the Soul Sport, with it's larger 2.0-liter engine is more to your liking, there's good news here as well. For 2012, Soul+, Soul! and Soul Sport models get bumped to 160 horsepower (from 142), but are now rated at 27 mpg city, 33 mpg highway instead of last year's 24 city, 30 highway.

Outside, Kia knew not to mess with a good thing. Revisions to exterior styling are subtle, but include LED daylight running lamps and LED tail lamps. The hood is new, as are the front and rear bumpers, and two new colors (Canyon and Moss) are added to the option list. Inside buyers can opt for an Infinity premium audio system and a UVO infotainment system designed in conjunction with Microsoft. If you want heated leather seats and automatic climate control, you can option out a Soul to include these touches as well; in fact, Kia has Soul trim level for nearly any budget or taste. Look for the 2012 Kia Soul to start hitting dealer lots sometime this summer, with pricing to be announced closer to launch.

Hyundai Assures You Of A Trade In Value

The 2012 Hyundai Veloster. Image: Hyundai Motor America

When it comes to automakers who think outside of the box, it's tough to beat Hyundai. Their "Hyundai Assurance" program began by offering buyers a 10 year, 100,000-mile powertrain warranty, removing any concerns potential buyers may have had over Hyundai's durability. Next, their Assurace program addressed the economic meltdown by (temporarily) offering to take back cars, with no financial or credit penalty, in the event of job loss. Next up for Hyundai? Their Assurance program will now guarantee a trade-in value on your new Hyundai (purchased after May 1), from months 24 through 48 of your loan. What better way to give buyers peace of mind than by telling them what their car will be worth in two to four years?

Some owners take better care of their vehicles than others, and Hyundai's Assurance program addresses this. If your car is appraised by the dealership at a higher value than the original quote, you get the higher trade-in amount. If it appraises lower, don't worry: you'll still get the guaranteed amount towards the purchase of a new Hyundai.

There's fine print, to be sure, and the program is pure marketing genius on the part of Hyundai. First, you need to finance all eligible vehicles through Hyundai Credit, ensuring that Hyundai earns interest on your loan, not some other financial institution. Next, and perhaps most obvious, you need to trade your Hyundai in on another Hyundai, so you can't just sell your car back to the dealership and buy another brand. Here's the genius part, though: to be eligible for the program, cars must be serviced at scheduled intervals by an authorized Hyundai dealership. In other words, Hyundai is capturing your business for the car sale, financing and service throughout the first 48 months of ownership. If that's not genius, then I don't know what is.

Scion FR-S Concept (Toyota FT-86 Transformed ‘again’) Walk-Around Videos

Posted: 21 Apr 2011 07:16 AM PDT

The 2011 New York Auto Show has brought us some interesting vehicles, one of them being the Scion FR-S concept which is an evolution of the Toyota FT-86 that we first saw just before the 2009 Tokyo Motor Show. Since then, Toyota has tweaked the design over and over making us enthusiasts truly impatient and ready to see this bad-boy on the road finally. Two new walk-around-videos have been released showing many of the highlighted design cues of the new Scion FR-S concept. If the production version is anything like what we see here, then Toyota may have a winner in my book. Please don't fu*k this up Toyota! Enjoy the videos below!

The Fastest Production Sedan in the World Featured at 2011 New York Auto Show: 2011 Porsche Panamera Turbo S

Posted: 21 Apr 2011 06:55 AM PDT

Porsche has really pulled out their arsenal and put it in their new 4-door luxury-sports car turning it into the world's fastest production sedan.  The all new 2011 Porsche Panamera Turbo S is the epitome of what a true 4-door sports car should be sporting a 550 horsepower and up to 590 pound-feet of torque via the Sport Chrono package's overboost feature. The new Panamera Turbo S is one of the many highlights featured at the 2011 New York Auto Show this week.

The new 2011 Porsche Panamera Turbo S is expected to hit 60mph from a standstill in just 3.6 seconds and reach a top speed of 190 mph. The Turbo S Panamera will add 20-inch wheels, new sideskirts, increased rear axle track width, bi-color leather upholstery and Agate Gray Metallic paint. The price of admission for the world's fastest production sedan will be $173,000 when it goes on sale in the Spring of this year. So much for waiting for the new BMW M5's performance figures later this year. Porsche has literally jumped the gun on this one in filling the spot for the fastest production sedan. Sorry Cadillac, you have been dethroned.

What is the ‘CleanThis’ Rogue Security Application and How to Remove CleanThis

Posted: 21 Apr 2011 06:31 AM PDT

It is bad enough that the economic conditions around the world are not the best but somehow hackers want to keep people down by spreading illicit security programs such as the newly discovered 'CleanThis' application. CleanThis (Clean This) has been discovered by security researchers to be a fake anti-virus program that resembles the legitimate HijackThis program developed by security company TrendMicro.

Computer users who have encountered CleanThis have reported several instances where CleanThis has eliminated the ability for them to simply access their desktop. Additionally, CleanThis has been found to lead users to a purchase page that asks for credit card information to begin the process of buying a full version of the CleanThis program. It has been confirmed that a full version of CleanThis does no more than the free one that is usually installed through a Trojan horse download. CleanThis will pretend that it can detect and remove viruses and other malware on a PC but it will not even if you purchase a 'full-version'.

How Can You Remove CleanThis?

CleanThis can be very difficult to manually remove if you are an inexperienced computer user. Not to mention, CleanThis has been known to populate the Windows Registry with many different entries and removing the wrong entries could render a PC damaged or useless. The use of a reputable antispyware or antivirus tool is recommended to safely remove CleanThis from your Windows computer.

To easily remove CleanThis, find the following process and end them in the task manager. After that is done, delete each related CleanThis file from your hard drive. In additional to locating the following processes, it is recommended that you delete the CleanThis registry entries listed below as well. It is also a good idea to uninstall the CleanThis application via your add/remove programs function found in the Windows Control Panel if your system recognizes CleanThis has an installed program.

CleanThis files (and folders) to remove:

  • %UserProfile%\Application Data\completescan
  • %UserProfile%\Application Data\install
  • %UserProfile%\Application Data\gog.exe
  • %Documents and Settings%\[User Name]\Desktop\CleanThis.lnk
