| 2011 New York Auto Show: 2012 Chrysler 300 SRT8 Introduced with 465 horsepower 6.4-liter HEMI Posted: 20 Apr 2011 03:46 PM PDT It seems to be a trend with car manufactures pumping out some serious horsepower especially when it comes to the Chrysler Corp with the introduction of a 465 horsepower 2012 Chrysler 300 SRT8 at this year's New York Auto Show. Chrysler already took the wraps off of another SRT8 product in the form of the new 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 sporting the same 6.4-liter HEMI V8 found in the 2012 300 SRT8. All dressed up in tuxedo-like sheet metal, the new 2012 Chrysler 300 SRT8 can be considered to be somewhat of a sleeper. Alongside of the 300 SRT8's stablemate, the Charger SRT8, they will attempt to conquer the streets in a high-class fashion introducing advanced fuel saving technologies and a hot-rod attitude. Hit up the lengthy press release below for all of the information on the new 2012 Chrysler 300 SRT8.

| Ford Reveals New Taurus SHO For 2013 Posted: 20 Apr 2011 11:00 AM PDT The Ford Taurus SHO has always had understated looks. Part of the sporty sedan's appeal was that it didn't look as fast as it really was, going all the way back to the car's initial launch in 1989. When Ford launched the latest version of the Taurus SHO in 2010, some critics called it's appearance bland, or too much like the other models in the Taurus lineup. Understated is one thing, but boring is something else entirely, so Ford has made some revisions to the Taurus SHO for the 2013 model year. Gone is the current car's chrome grill, replaced by an aggressive looking black grille trimmed in chrome. The previously rounded front fascia gets an edgier look, complete with a black lower grille and black plastic fog lamp surrounds. The blacked out treatment extends to the rocker panels and side view mirrors, and even wraps around the lower rear fascia. The look is distinctive without being flashy, and I give Ford two thumbs up on the new SHO's styling. The current AWD drivetrain and 3.5-liter EcoBoost V-6 remain, but that's not a bad thing. The EcoBoost V-6 produces 365 horsepower and really does pull like a V-8, even from down low. Instead of tweaking the engine or drivetrain, Ford chose to focus their efforts on improving the SHO's handling, so the car gets bigger brakes, torque vectoring control to mimic the effect of a limited slip differential, improved paddle shifters and new electric power steering. Just in case you want a more hard-core SHO, Ford has you covered with a newly announced SHO Performance Package, designed with track days in mind. Buyer who opt for the Performance Package get a sport-tuned suspension with unique shocks and springs, track-tuned calipers with high performance brake pads, recalibrated electric steering, Electronic Stability Control with "Track" and "Full Off" modes, 3.16:1 final drive for quick acceleration, extreme-duty cooling and 20" wheels with high performance, summer-only tires. Pricing for the new Taurus SHO hasn't been set, but you can expect to see it in dealer showrooms by mid 2012. |
| This Is Scion’s FT-86 (the Scion FR-S) Posted: 20 Apr 2011 09:58 AM PDT The official unveiling of the Scion FR-S is scheduled for later today, but that hasn't prevented images from turning up on the internet ahead of time. The car that will be revealed in New York today is officially listed as a concept, so read into that what you will. The styling has been toned down a bit from the FT-86 II Concept that Toyota displayed in Geneva, but the latest concept looks a long way from production to me. The blacked out windows say "don't expect an accurate rendering of a production interior", while the sharply arched and creased front fenders would be difficult (expensive, actually) to put into production. As Autoblog's Zach Bowman points out, those enormous wheels will never see production and the side view mirrors can't meet DOT standards. So where does that leave the FT-86? The truth is that no one knows. Maybe it will show up on these shores wearing a Toyota badge, or maybe it will show up here as a Scion. Maybe it will look like one of the recent concepts, or maybe it won't. Maybe it will be released for sales in 2012, but if this is what Toyota is showing us this late in the game, chances of a 2012 intro aren't good. I'm still holding out hope that Toyota gets this car right, but it gets harder to believe that each and every time I write a story about it. Source: SpeedHunters, via Autoblog |
| 2010 Ram 2500 HD Laramie 4×4: Truly RAM Tough Posted: 20 Apr 2011 09:47 AM PDT Dodge has introduced several improved products in a matter of just a few years. Within the Dodge lineup consumers with an appetite for true utility can satisfy that hunger within the Ram line of trucks. When it comes to Heavy Duty trucks that need to tow thousands of pounds, the new Ram 2500 HD Laramie is the right tool for the job. The latest Ram truck has been transformed into a comfortable big-rig that aims to please the most demanding blue collar jobs that can be thrown at it. I was fortunate enough to experience the Ram 2500 Laramie again in a milder visual form than the one I reviewed last year which was tricked out with all types of Mopar accessories. This time the Ram 2500 Laramie was in its natural state ready for the dirty work and none of that pretty-boy show car stuff. My Ram 2500 Heavy Duty Laramie test vehicle was equipped with the monstrous 6.7-liter Inline 6-cylinder Cummins Turbo Diesel, producing 350 horsepower and 650 pounds-feet of torque. With that amount of power, the 2500 Laramie can tow up to 12,600 pounds. This figure is somewhat competitive from other offerings such as GM's Silverado/Sierra and Ford's F-Series trucks. At any rate, when you have a truck that can tow in excess of 10,000 pounds, you have a serious rig that means business. All of this towing power is a serious job for any truck which means you will have to spend some time and money at the pump, sometimes more than you would like. With gas prices on the rise, filling a 34-gallon diesel fuel tank is no cheap game. That translates into a conservative drive if you want to have any type of decent gas mileage. I was able to get a modest 16mpg on the highway with the figure dropping to 13mpg in the city. Of course that is without pulling any type of load, but I can only imagine what anything near the 12,600 pound towing capacity would do the fuel consumption. With the new Ram, Dodge has managed to make the cabin comfy and easily manageable for any type of driver. The leather seating in the Laramie variant of Ram trucks has an option not only to be heated, but to be ventilated as well. The in-dash Uconnect voice-command navigation-stereo system comes from other Chrysler corp. vehicles. This incorporates an easy-to-use interface for operation of Bluetooth, 30 GB hard-drive based stereo, and sat-nav. A handy backup camera, a much needed option in a big truck like this, is nicely integrated into the in-dash nav/stereo screen. Trust me, the backup camera came in handy each and every time I put this big rig into reverse. The interior is very spacious providing a large backseat for your working buddies and their hard-hats. The folding rear seats offer some additional storage for small items but are mostly blocked by the Alpine subwoofer powered by the 520-watt stereo system. On the outside, the new Ram has an intimidating look that makes a statement for those who drive slow in the fast lane. The large Dodge grill alone is menacing to the week-hearted. Nothing is soft about the Ram 2500 except for the seating surfaces, with good reason. The bed can be had in a 6-foot or 8-foot version. When things get a little dicey, 4-wheel-drive comes in handy with an easy turn of a knob. Traction control is not included but would be a nice feature to have. You don't want the wheels to be on a slippery surface when the torque starts to kick you in the back. Those looking for a truck that answers their demanding hauling and towing needs without sacrificing cabin comfort will find the new Ram trucks very gratifying. The 2500 HD Ram will bring a bit more to the table. With a tried-and-true Cummins Diesel included in the equation you have added power over the standard HEMI V8. Price for my diesel Ram 2500 HD Laramie edition starts at $42,450 with an as-tested price of $53,805. Copyright: 2011 AutomotiveAddicts.com |

| 2011 Cadillac Escalade 4WD Platinum Hybrid Review & Test Drive Posted: 20 Apr 2011 06:20 AM PDT 'HIGHER LEVELS OF LUXURY, STYLE AND TECHNOLOGY'
Already the best selling full-size luxury sport utility on the world-wide market, Cadillac marks the 2011 model year by introducing a very special, limited-edition 'Platinum' Hybrid with even more luxury inside, more style outside and more technological features under the skin. Cadillac's innovative Escalade Hybrid is the world's first hybrid full-size luxury SUV. It achieves an EPA rated 20 miles per gallon in the city, up to a 33% fuel economy improvement over the non-hybrid model, and 23mpg/highway. Escalade's Hybrid's patented two-mode hybrid system consists of an advanced electrically variable transmission and a 300-volt nickel-metal hydride Energy Storage System. These systems work in concert with the standard 6.0 liter V8 Gen IV gasoline engine with Active Fuel Management and late-intake valve closing technology. The key to Escalade's two-mode hybrid system is that the hybrid system itself generates the electric power used to propel the vehicle. When the brakes are applied or the vehicle is coasting, the electric motors within the hybrid system create electricity that is stored in the 300-volt battery. This stored energy is then used to move the vehicle. This cycle repeats itself continually to increase fuel economy. Providing power to the hybrid's electrically variable transmission's two electric motors is a 300-volt nickel-metal hydride Energy Storage System. This battery pack is under the second-row seat, where it takes up virtually no additional space and does not interfere with second-or third-row entry or exit. Additional features of the hybrid powertrain and supporting systems include: a fully blended regenerative braking system that captures energy that would otherwise by lost during vehicle deceleration; a 6.0 liter V8 engine with Active Fuel Management and late intake valve closing (Atkinson-cycle combustion process) for reduced pumping losses and better overall fuel economy; the engine is rated 332hp at 5,100rpm and 367lb.ft. of torque at 4,100rpm, and runs on regular unleaded gasoline; an Auto Stop Mode comes into play when the vehicle reaches 0mph, the gasoline engine may automatically shut down, leaving the engine off there by conserving fuel and emitting no tailpipe emissions; at low speeds such as during city driving or heavy stop-and-go traffic, the hybrid may use only electric power, and when engine loads permit the hybrid uses both engine and electric power sources to move the vehicle; an exhaust system and resonator specially tuned for the 6.0 liter LIVC engine's Active Fuel Management operation that ensures comfortable interior acoustics and a pleasant exhaust note during both V4 and V8 operation; an electrically driven, 300-volt AC compressor reduces vibration and allows the HVAC system to cool the passenger compartment even when the gasoline engine is shut off, it includes the standard tri-zone climate control system; an electrically driven, 42-volt variable assist, rack & pinion power steering system reduces vibration and provides up to a 0.5mpg fuel economy improvement by reducing parasitic losses common in belt-driven hydraulic systems; the Energy Storage System cooling system's internal fan is tuned to be quiet at low vehicle speeds, when occupants could more easily hear it; the Escalade's Hybrid's battery pack durability and reliability are maintained via optimized charge and discharge cycles, as well as a dedicated cooling system that draws air from the passenger compartment. The vehicle's emission control system, hybrid drive line and the energy storage system are warranted for eight year/100,000 miles. When behind the wheel you never notice any of the hybrid or gasoline engine components at work. All is silent and seamless as it switches between electric and gasoline/electric power modes. What could be simpler in saving fuel and cutting down on emissions? The new, 2011 limited-edition 'Platinum' model ups the ante with an exclusive package of luxury, style and technology. On the outside the distinctive front fascia consists of a Bentley mesh styled upper and lower grille finished in platinum, unique 22X9in. aluminum alloy wheels finished in chrome and wrapped with Bridgestone 285/45R22in. performance steel belted radial tires, exclusive Platinum exterior badges, and vertically fitted LED headlamps that emulate the characteristics of natural daylight much more closely than traditional auto lighting, and are more environmentally friendly lasting 10 times longer than halogen bulbs. Under the skin is GM's exclusive Magnetic Ride Control system first seen in the Corvette that gives the Escalade Platinum more precise body motion control. It is a real-time damping system-reading the road in millisecond intervals and changes damping in just 5 milliseconds. It replaces conventional mechanical-valve shocks with electronically controlled shocks filled with a magneto-rheological fluid containing minute iron particles. Under the presence of magnetic charge, the iron particles align to provide damping resistance almost instantly. This high-tech feature gives the Escalade Platinum a smoother ride over poorly paved road surfaces and keeps body lean to a minimum during hard cornering. It is also seamless and non-intrusive as you steer the Escalade during straight-line cruising on the freeway or when in the mountains slicing through curving roads. Inside the Escalade Hybrid Platinum is the latest example of Cadillac's 21st. century return to handcrafted luxury detail. The instrument panel, center storage console and door trim are all leather wrapped. They feature decorative French seams that convey an elegantly tailored look and feel. Materials include rich leather on the instrument panel, with olive ash and walnut burl wood inlays, chrome and aluminum trim. Tehama aniline leather is unique to the Escalade Hybrid Platinum and is used to fully trim the first-and second-row seats. Contrasting-color stitching is used on the French seams for a distinctive, luxurious appearance and the seatbacks feature embroidered Cadillac wreath and crest insignias. The leather-covered seats are comfortable and convenient, with the industry-exclusive fold-and-tumble second-row feature that eases access to the third-row seat. Additional Escalade Platinum standard interior features include Platinum-specific aluminum door sills with a rear Platinum Escalade plaque just ahead of the step-up bumper, floor mats front/rear/cargo area; a heated, power tilting, leather/wood steering wheel; heated and cooled cupholders and a power liftgate that opens and closes with the touch of a button. Also, the DVD entertainment system adds screens integrated into each front-seat headrest, in addition to the exiting roof-mounted screen. Each front-row headrest screen has its own driver and input controls. The headrest units can be operated independently or in tandem. This system enables passengers in different seats to watch or listen to different entertainment choices. Escalade Hybrid Platinum models also include the acclaimed Bose 5.1 Digital Surround system, as well as the eight-inch touch screen navigation and control of the DVD, CD, MP3 and XM satellite radio entertainment. The pull-down eight-inch color screen in the middle of the headliner in the 2nd. row gives rear passengers 3-separate DVD's to watch. The ninth-generation OnStar technology has been revised and is more flexible with a voice recognition system now smart enough to interpret different sentences/phrases without actually hearing the exact 2-3 word commands from the user. For example, if a subscriber wants to place a call using the Hands Free Calling System, if they simply say, "I would like to place a phone call" or "Need to make a phone call," instead of saying the exact "dial" or "call" command, the system will understand that the user wants to place a call and process that command accordingly. The system is capable of recognizing thousands of sentences that user may say. Standard equipment in the new Escalade Platinum not mentioned above includes rear locking differential, automatic rear leveling system, power operated running boards-open the door they deploy, close the door they pull up and out of the way, reaview camera system, Bluetooth for phone, comfortable and supportive 14-way power front heated/cooled bucket seats, 2nd. row 60/40 bench, 3-passenger 3rd. row seat, power liftgate with liftglass, remote vehicle starter, power adjustable pedals, power windows/door locks with express up/down up front, driver information center with vehicle personalization for two drivers, power tilt/leather wrapped/wood heated steering wheel, universal home remote rear audio sound system controls, power fold/heated side mirrors, LED vertical rear lamps, chrome roof rack, variable-speed, intermittent wipers/washers, rear wiper/washer, 2-12-volt/1-120-volt plugs, 2nd. row/3rd headliner lamps, pull-down 2nd. row armrest/dual cupholders, self-dimming rearview mirror, power sliding sunroof, dual map lamps, overhead console with sunglass holder, full center console with a large, two-tier storage box, grab handles in the rear, dual, lighted vanity mirrors, storage slots in each front door, thick cut-pile carpeting, map pockets behind the front seats, Cadillac quartz clock, automatic headlamp control and chrome door handles. Standard safety features include daytime running lamps, dual frontal airbags, head curtain side airbags, all seating rows, side impact airbags, thorax & pelvic protection for driver and front passenger, passenger sensing system, all three-point safety belts with load limiters/pretensioners up front, side blind zone alert in the sideview mirrors, StabiliTrack stability control system with traction control, 1-year OnStar with automatic crash response, tire pressure monitoring system, theft-deterrent system, rear child proof locks, remote keyless entry, front and rear crumple zones, and steel beams in each door. The new, limited-edition Platinum Escalade Hybrid is one of the best and most efficient full-size sport utility vehicles available. It has all of the 'state-of-the-art' features that you come to expect from Cadillac, plus a more efficient powertrain stretching you fueling needs. The price for this fully-loaded Escalade Platinum Hybrid model is $88,140.00, and well worth it if it is the way you want to roll. COPYRIGHT:2011:HARVEY SCHWARTZ SPECIFICATIONS
